Senior Vice President, Global Government Affairs

The SVP, Global Government Affairs reports to IA’s President & CEO and is responsible for overseeing IA’s outreach to Congress and the Executive branch and coordinating the advocacy activities of IA’s U.K. office. The ideal candidate for this position will be someone with a background in and a passion for internet policy and a deep familiarity with the legislative process.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

Leveraging experience and expertise to offer strategic guidance and optimize IA’s ability to convey its policy positions to key stakeholders by:

  • Building and managing strategic relationships with federal government officials primarily in Congress, the Administration, and federal agencies
  • Coordinating with association members to develop political strategies and achieve desired outcomes
  • Collaborating with IA’s State Government Affairs, Legal & Policy, and Communications teams to ensure that all initiatives and messaging remain aligned with IA’s overall mission and strategies
  • Developing annual strategic plans and budgets, and overseeing IA’s Global Government Affairs expenditures throughout the year
  • Managing IA’s existing in-house government affairs team by:
    • Fostering a collaborative team dynamic within the team
    • Providing direction, regular advice and guidance to staff
    • Supporting the professional development of team members, including by offering formal and informal feedback regarding performance to reward success and identify opportunities for growth
    • Recruiting, developing, and retaining staff to support association activities
  • Managing external consultants
  • Planning for and tracking relevant committee hearings, legislation, and federal proposals, and
    communicating relevant information to association staff and IA’s member companies in a timely manner
  • Preparing for Congressional testimony, including by coordinating with committee and personal staff, overseeing the drafting of written testimony and opening statements, and organizing and managing mock Q&A; sessions
  • Securing federal officials’ participation in events in DC and across the country
  • Managing the IA PAC and PAC-sponsored events
  • Presenting strategies to and summarizing activities for IA’s Board of Directors
  • Performing other duties/projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in federal government affairs; experience in Congress is a requirement
  • Knowledge of the federal legislative process
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical, time-management, and project planning skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and independently
  • Results-oriented and exhibits excellent judgement
  • A high-level of energy and a willingness to take on all variety of assignments as part of a small but dynamic team
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred Experience/Skills

  • Prior experience working for a trade association, a large technology company
  • Prior experience in a senior management/executive role
  • Working knowledge of key IA policy issues, including data privacy, online content moderation, copyright protection, etc.
