Statement Opposing Iowa HF 2489

Sacramento, CA — Internet Association Vice President of State Government Affairs Robert Callahan issued the following statement in opposition to HF 2489, a bill in the Iowa State Legislature that would impose new taxes on digital marketplaces and online travel services:

“The internet industry calls on Iowa legislators to oppose HF 2489’s provisions that target the vibrant internet economy. More than 27,000 Iowans are employed by the internet sector, and this bill imposes onerous new taxes on internet marketplaces and negatively impacts online travel services. Online platforms play an important role in facilitating tourism to Iowa. This bill would place significant financial burdens on companies and could decrease affordable travel accommodations for travelers looking to visit Iowa.”
